The coronavirus has impacted all of us either directly or indirectly. Cities are locking down or at least ordering businesses to close to help control the spread of the virus. Photography, like other industries, is starting to feel the effects of the virus as photographers are dealing with cancellations creating an uncertain future. It is difficult to do photography within a pandemic. The good news is that we will get over this hill. What can you do to protect yourself so you can make it to the other side of the hill?
Photographers are a very suspectable group to get infected with the virus. Our work requires us to touch gear and props, which could be contaminated, and to put our cameras to our faces, which is how the virus gets into our bodies. So what can we do to protect ourselves?
keep your hands clean
The first way to do photography in a pandemic is to keep our hands clean by washing and or sanitizing them frequently. Whenever you touch anything, wash your hands before you put your camera to your eye. I saw a photographer using gloves instead of washing hands; although gloves are an excellent defence, they are not ideal for photographers. The problem is that if you touch a contaminated surface, you can transmit the virus to your camera and consequently to yourself when you put the camera to your face.
Sanitize sanitize.
The second way to do photography in a pandemic is to sanitize your equipment regularly. Before you use your gear, spray it, or wipe it down with sanitizer. If you are venturing out to take pictures, make sure you bring your sanitizer with you to sanitize your gear when you or your equipment touch any surface. If you have to rent gear, make sure that you sanitize it before you use it. Rental places (ones that are still open) are now sanitizing there equipment, but you still need to sanitize it yourself before you use it.
These are trying times, but if you stick to rules of hygiene and sanitize all the time, you will keep yourself healthy as you do photography in a pandemic.
